In The Fall of Icarus, inspired by Greek mythology, Pieter Brueghel the Elder chose to relegate the event to the background: only Icarus’s legs, falling into the sea after flying too close to the sun, appear in a corner of the painting. The viewer’s gaze is first drawn to the daily activities of the peasants, the shepherd and the sailors, highlighting with humor and subtlety the world’s indifference to individual tragedies.
