Claude Monet made this painting in the winter of 1868-69. It is now exhibited at the Orsay Museum in Paris. It illustrates the beginnings of Monet's research on early morning light. Observe the shadow of the magpie: it is reversed for aesthetic reasons. The painting's novelty and daring were rejected by the 1869 Parisian Salon jury.
