Claude Monet described this large, two-metre long painting now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris as an ornamental panel. It was first displayed at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in 1876. It depicts an everyday scene, unlike the fashionable academic paintings of the time which favoured historic events and figures.
