At the end of his life, Van Gogh spent 2 months in Auvers-sur-Oise, during springtime. He completed more than 70 paintings there, including several of the village houses. The house on this canvas can still be seen at 5 de la sente du Gré. Van Gogh used horizontal and vertical brushstrokes to differentiate houses with thatched roofs from those with newly-tiled roofs.
