Joaquin Sorolla was the leader of modern Spanish painting. Trained in Spain and in Paris, from 1890 he created large-format, brightly coloured paintings on the themes of childhood, beaches and fishing. Influenced by Impressionism, Sorolla was highly skilled in rendering the different shades of the colour white.
