Winslow Homer is an American painter known for his seascapes and coastal landscapes. Painted between 1873 and 1876, Breezing Up depicts a small group sailing off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The sails billowing in the breeze, the light glinting off the water and the clouds drifting across the sky lend the work a sense of movement and freedom. The painting can now be seen at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
